Locate the water and the last completed stage
Did the dishwasher fill, wash and show that the program finished? A machine interrupted during washing may still contain water because the final drain has not happened. Write down the last stage you recognized and any displayed message.
The shape of the tub matters. A small recessed sump and the broad floor of the dishwasher are not the same place. Do not use a picture from another model as a normal-water-level specification.
| What you see | What it may help distinguish | Next observation |
|---|---|---|
| Water only in a recessed filter / sump area | Possible normal retained water, depending on the model. | Compare the exact model manual; do not judge from another dishwasher’s photo. |
| Water across the tub after a completed cycle | Drain performance needs assessment. | Record the water location and any message at completion. |
| Water remains after an interrupted cycle | The machine may not have reached its final drain stage. | Which stage stopped and whether the display reported a fault. |
| The tub empties, then water returns | Timing and the household drain connection matter. | Whether it follows sink use or happens while the dishwasher is idle. |

Include what happened under the sink
Mention a recent disposal replacement, drain installation or sink that has become slow to empty. These details help connect the appliance symptom with the installation. If water returns after the tub emptied, note whether it followed sink use or occurred while the kitchen was idle.
A disposal connection, a restricted drain route or an installation problem can be relevant without proving a pump failure. Leave hoses connected and describe the history. Do not put drain-cleaning chemicals in the dishwasher or reach into a disposal.

Keep cleaning within the owner manual
Switch the dishwasher off and let it cool before an owner-accessible inspection. If your manual describes a removable filter, follow that design’s procedure. Some filters and access arrangements differ, so a generic twist-and-pull instruction is not suitable for every unit.
Look for obvious loose food or an item in the way without reaching into hidden openings. Glass or sharp debris may be present. Leave pump covers, wiring and the base panel for service. If water is escaping onto the floor, stop using the machine instead of running repeated test cycles.

Viking, Thermador and Monogram: identify the right version
Start with the full model from an accessible label or your existing paperwork. A model-specific manual is more useful than the brand name alone. Save a clear photograph of a message exactly as it appears.
For Viking, find the manual for the installed series before using a drain/cancel sequence or removing a filter. For Thermador, keep the full E-Nr and complete code: the manufacturer’s error reference contains different formats. For Monogram, match GE Appliances’ filter and retained-water guidance to the actual model rather than treating it as a rule for every dishwasher.
| Brand | Information to bring to the call |
|---|---|
| Viking | Full model and any displayed wording. Use that model’s manual for the filter and drain/cancel controls. |
| Thermador | Full E-Nr and the complete error indication, including separators and suffixes. |
| Monogram | Exact model and filter arrangement. GE Appliances guidance distinguishes models with different filter systems. |

What a drain assessment should explain
The question is not only whether a motor can be heard. A useful assessment establishes what stage the machine reached, whether water can leave through the installed route and whether it returns afterward. Those findings help distinguish the appliance’s operation from the household connection.
Tell us about detergent changes, unusual suds or a newly fitted cabinet panel as well. They are part of the history, not reasons to replace a part without testing. A short description of one completed or interrupted cycle is more useful than repeated attempts that erase the original message.

Book the relevant brand service in Burlington
Call 781-655-8142 with the address, brand, model if available, water location and the last stage that worked. Mention recent plumbing work, a custom door front or new flooring that might affect removal clearance.
Viking, Thermador and Monogram dishwasher requests are arranged Monday–Saturday, 9 AM–6 PM. We check the exact address and appointment availability. Leave the machine installed and hoses attached; a same-day opening does not establish which parts the repair will require.
